As part of efforts to maintain best practices and strengthen existing partnerships, the Nigerian Copyright Commission recently held an interactive session with the US Copyright Department to explore areas of common interest.
The meeting was held at the instance of a member of the US Copyright Department, Mrs Aurela J. Schultz who was on a familiarisation visit to the Director-General of the Commission, Mr. Afam Ezekude in Abuja on July 10, 2017.
The DG speaking at the event appreciated the efforts of the US government in supporting activities of the Commission but however stressed that there is need to strengthen existing areas of collaborations.
Representing the DG, Director Regulatory NCC, Mr Michael Akpan spoke about the achievements and policy directions of the Commission, noting that the Federal Government in June this year approved the ratification of some treaties and that the draft Copyright Reform is now before the National Assembly.
Speaking during the meeting, Schultz noted that the meeting was aimed at exchanging ideas; learning about the on-going Copyright Reform project and other policies of the Commission. She added that information sharing will no doubt strengthen existing relationship in the areas of Copyright and IP administration in general.
The meeting was also attended by Directors of Prosecution, Mr Abdul-Ter Kohol; Enforcement, Mr Augustine Amodu ; Director, Nigerian Copyright Institute (NCI) Mr. Idowu Ogunkuade; and the PA to the DG, Mr. Collins Nweke. The Directors took turns to speak about the mandates and achievements of their various Departments.
The hallmark of the event was the presentation of some books by Schultz to the Commission.
