The Director-General, Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Mr Afam Ezekude has urged students to appreciate the values of Intellectual Property and Copyright at the youthful stage of their life.Mr. Ezekude stated this when the students of Christabel Private School Abuja paid him a courtesy call during their excursion to the Commission’s headquarters Abuja on October 26th, 2016.
The DG, NCC speaking to the students on the basics of copyright, explained the benefits of copyright, the importance of respecting people’s rights to intellectual property to enhance their consciousness and also charged them to educate their parents and peers on the gains of copyright as leaders of tomorrow.
He further expounded to them, the mandate and responsibilities of the Commission which is to create awareness on copyright, regulate the creative industry, curb piracy and to prosecute and punish offenders of copyright infringement.
Subsequently, the Public Affairs Department hosted the students to a sensitization workshop which was anchored by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs, NCC Mr. Aderemi Adewusi and Assistant Chief Public Affairs Officer, NCC, Miss Oyebola Oyewo. Practical sessions were held with the students, they were made to originate their personal ideas in writing and arts to further enhance their comprehension of the concept of copyright.
Their creative output formed the basis of the subsequent discourse on the principles and benefits of copyright. The session was concluded with a question and answer segment and refreshments.After this, the students were conducted around the e-registration Centre of the Regulatory Department where the sectional head, Mr. Ajala, educated them on the process and benefits of the e-registration programme of the commission.
Highlights of this interactive sensitization programme included the presentation of gifts by the Director – General of NCC to the school and the fact that many of the students expressed the desire to register the works that they created during the workshop.
The Vice-Principal (Academic) of Christabel Private School, Mr. Mabawonku Abayomi, who led the entourage, commenting on their excursion to the commission, appreciated the warm reception accorded the school in the course of the visit, the enhancement of their knowledge on copyright and willingness of the school to intensify the teaching of copyright in their school.
Others also present were, the Vice Principal (Admin) and Accountant Christabel Private School and staff of the commission.
