Director, Enforcement of the Commission, Mr. Augustine Amodu who disclosed this in a report noted that the items seized from the suspects were all broadcast enhancing devices and gadgets deployed in the illegal re-transmission of copyright protected broadcast signals within the area.Giving a breakdown of the operations, the Director said five persons suspected to be broadcast pirates were arrested at Warri LGA during a raid carried on the September 19, 2016 and broadcast gadgets worth Twelve Million naira (N12, 000, 000. 00) were seized.
Mr. Amodu stated that a total of 103 decoders belonging to different digital broadcast stations including DSTV, GOTV, STARTIMES, HITV, STRONG and TREND were confiscated; other items include sophisticated (skylink) booster, one (1) thermocool wall mounted stabilizer (5000VA), 6 other stabilizers and other devices including wires, senders, boosters, remote controls e.t.c. He said the satellite dishes mounted by the suspected pirates were destroyed, while the LSBs were also confiscated during the raid.
The Director, also disclosed that five suspected broadcast pirates were arrested while a total of 54 decoders of different broadcasters; DSTV, GOTV, STARTIMES, HITV STRONG and TREND; 5 stabilizers and other devices among which are wire, senders, boosters and remote controls worth Five Million naira (N5, 000, 000. 00) were confiscated on September 20, 2016 in Ughelli LGA, during an anti-broadcast piracy operation; while the satellite dishes mounted by the suspected pirates were destroyed and also the LSBs were also confiscated during the raid.
He further stated that the joint team also carried out an enforcement operation in Sapele LGA on September 21, 2016; adding that 62 decoders of different broadcasters; DSTV, GOTV, STARTIMES, HITV STRONG and TREND; 5 stabilizers and other devices including wires, senders, boosters and remote controls estimated at Seven Million naira (N7, 000, 000. 00) were confiscated during the raid.
He assured that further investigation to ascertain the level of involvement of the suspects and their collaborators has since commenced with the view to prosecuting them stressing that the Commission will continue to make life unbearable for pirates.He further stressed that there will no longer be any hiding place for pirates and their collaborations in this country.
