NCC Confiscates Musical Contrivances Worth 10million in Onitsha

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) in a restrategized onslaught against the scourge of musical piracy in the south east has confiscated musical contrivances worth Ten (10) million naira in Onitsha, Anambra State, with an arrest of five (5) suspected pirates on September 8, 2016.

Director of Enforcement, NCC, Mr. Augustine Amodu, who disclosed this at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja said that Seven (7) Laptops, memory cards, numerous musical contrivances and items suspected to be used in infringing protected works to MP3, MP4 and Memory cards for commercial purposes were confiscated from the suspects.

He further stated that, the raid was carried out amidst threat from pirates who intercepted the surveillance team of the commission but after due strategic planning, the raid was executed.

The enforcement raid which took place at Emeka Offor Plaza, Onitsha against suspected musical pirates was carried out by a combined team of Copyright Inspectors backed up by Military officers, a crack team of the Nigerian Mobile Police Force and members of the Musical Record Owners Association of Nigeria (MORAN), Music Products Dealers Association (MPDAN) and the Press.

Commenting on the raid, the NCC Zonal manager, Onitsha, Mr. Emeka Ogbonna, described the raid as a huge success and a blow to pirates and their supporters across the state, adding that for years piracy has constituted a major economic setback to musicians and investors in the musical industry.

The Zonal Manager also stated that arrested suspects were granted administrative bail pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation, stressing that the Commission will leave no stone unturned in the fight against piracy in the state and environs. Click here to view more pictures!
