NCC Impounds Pirated Copies of Olusegun Obasanjo’s My Watch; Arrests 5

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has arrested five suspected pirates engaged in illegal production, possession and commercial distribution of several copies of former president Olusegun Obasanjo’s memoir “My Watch” and other literary works.

Upon complaint against unauthorized production and commercial distribution by Kachifo Limited, publishers of the book, the Commission carried out investigation and surveillance and subsequently raided different locations within the FCT, Abuja.

A total of Four Hundred and Ninety (490) copies of infringing copyright books estimated at Three Million Five Hundred Thousand naira (N3, 500,000) were confiscated by the team of copyright inspectors led by Mr. Peters Udomiaye, PA II (Enforcement) during the antipiracy operation carried out on May 20, 2015.Director, Enforcement Department, Mr Augustine Amodu, who disclosed this in Abuja, said the team of inspectors were accompanied by 20 armed police personnel as back-up security.Giving a breakdown of the seizures, he stated that it included 64 packets of ‘My Watch’ (192 copies); ‘Global Trends in State Formation, 74 copies; Perspective on Nation-state Formation in Contemporary Africa, 80 copies and 140 copies of other titles.

He enjoined all stakeholders to partner with the Commission by providing it with all relevant information about the hideout and activities of suspected pirates and their accomplices.Mr. Amodu further assured that investigation has since commenced with a view to ensure the prosecution of all the arrested suspects.
