Vice President Osinbajo Canvasses Need for Virile Copyright System

Nigerian Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, has canvassed the need for an effective virile copyright system to guarantee optimum performance of the creative sector in the overall national economic index.

The Vice President, represented by the Director-General, Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Mr. Afam Ezekude, stated this in a keynote address during the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) annual week celebration held at Lagos on 2nd November, 2015.Osinbanjo while emphasizing that strong intellectual property regime is a vital ingredient for societal development that encourages domestic innovation, creativity and commitment to research also advocated the pressing need for establishment of structures to support the business aspect of entertainment as a panacea for meeting the challenges of the digital environment.

Similarly the guest lecturer, Prof. Bankole Sodipo, Solicitor and Managing Partner of G.O & Co while delivering his lecture on the theme “Intellectual Property Rights in the Digital Economy” discussed the problems of digital transformation and the need for training and pre-training due to the changing trend in the industry.While recommending a strong copyright law to stop illegal copying of works, he commended the legal frameworks being put in place by the Nigerian Copyright Commission to protect intellectual property.

As a mark of honour during the lecture, the Guest of Honour, Prince Bola Ajibola former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom was awarded THE COPYRIGHT GRAND MEDAL for his exemplary and selfless dedication to copyright and intellectual property in Nigeria. Other dignitaries present at the event includes stakeholders from the Music industry, Legal Profession, Barrister Chris Nkwocha, Zonal Director NCC Lagos Zone, Mr. Akeem Akpomade, notable artistes, individuals and organizations from the copyright industry.The COSON WEEK was also marked by deliberations among stakeholders as well as musical and dance performances from various artistes.
